Bass Phillip, established in 1979 by Phillip Jones, is a renowned Australian winery in Victoria's Gippsland region. Known for its exceptional Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, the winery has garnered acclaim for its organic and biodynamic farming practices, setting it apart in the Australian wine scene and drawing the attention of one of Gevrey-Chambertin's top winemakers, Jean Marie Fourrier, who in 2020 took over as winemaker. Spanning approximately 10 hectares, the vineyard's unique microclimate, coupled with minimal intervention winemaking, allows for wines that truly express their terroir. The focus on low yields and careful vineyard management has been a cornerstone of Bass Phillip's philosophy, aiming to produce wines of high complexity and longevity. Jean Marie Fourrier made the 2021 vintage from start to finish using the same principles that he does at Domaine Fourrier in Burgundy. As a result, it's one of the best Chardonnays we have ever tasted from Down Under. The vines for the estate bottling are 40+ years old and have been farmed biodynamically since 1993. There is uncanny purity to this wine, with lovely aromas of white flowers, stone fruits, liquid minerals, and a fantastic savory component. The palate is equally exceptional, with flavors of yellow fruit dominating, with tons of dry extract, salinity, and lingering notes of exotic fruits. This is a must-try if you love classic European-inspired Chardonnay from the new or old world. Only 20 cases were imported into the USA, and we have a limited amount due to arrive next month.
