1990 Château Sociando-Mallet

$149.99
1990 Château Sociando-Mallet

We have a limited amount of 1990 Château Sociando-Mallet, in prestine condition (pictured above). Sociando-Mallet is one of the stand-out addresses of the Haut-Medoc with a deep history dating back to the 17th century, with the original owners bearing the name Sociando. This Chateau became what it is today thanks to the help of Jean Gautreau, an athlete turned wine broker, who fell upon the Chateau while looking for an estate to buy for a Belgian client. Jean was so impressed by this Chateau in the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne overlooking the Gironde Estuary that he purchased it for himself, and the rest is history. The vineyards of Sociando are located on the Butte de Baleyron, one of the finest gravelly terroirs in the Médoc, which consists of Günz gravel over a deep layer of clay-limestone soil. This terroir perfectly regulates the water supply, enabling Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen extremely well and Merlot to acquire depth and complexity. This terroir is Sociando's soul. Though Merlot and Cabernet Franc also do well here, they provide the wine with complex structure, freshness, and elegance. Neil Martin and Jeb Dununuck both tasted this in 2024 and confirmed it has plenty of life left and is a great buy for the vintage!

Vinous (Neal Martin) 93 pts! "The 1990 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc picked between September 13 and October 2. It offers wonderful scents of red berry fruit, potpourri, lavender, and a touch of rooibos and garrigue, all very well defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The medium-bodied palate shows good depth and harmony, and the acidity is very well judged. This is a spicier-styled Sociando-Mallet with a healthy dose of black pepper, sage and curry leaf, while the finish is structured and offers very good length. This always had a good reputation and I understand why. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet. (Drink between 2019 - 2030)"

Jeb Dunnuck 93 points! "Now at over 30 years after the vintage, the 1990 Château Sociando-Mallet delivers everything you could want from a mature, impeccably made, classic Haut-Médoc. From vines just north of Saint-Estèphe, it has a regal profile with ripe dark fruits, leafy tobacco, iron, damp earth, and saddle leather nuances. These carry to a medium-bodied, elegant wine revealing resolved tannins, a focused, silky, lively mouthfeel, and a great finish. With very little bricking yet certainly a lighter rim, it's unquestionably fully mature, and I don't see any upside to holding bottles, but I have no doubt it will have a gradual evolution going forward for at least another decade. You could put this in a blind tasting with some top Grand Cru Classé and it would do more than fine. (Drink between 2024-2034)"
