2017 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain

$149.99
2017 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain
The 2017 white Burgundy's are great, and we have some ex-cellar bottles here from one of Francois Carillons' top premier cru vineyards, Champs-Gain. Francois loves giving the fruit a little extra hang time, but as a descendant of one of Burgundy's greatest winemakers, Francois Virot, who helped put Domaine Leflaive on the map, Francois uses a skillful touch to retain balance in his wines. Champ-Gain is a slower ripening vineyard, which develops many exciting flavors, and Francois' piece comes from a 2-hectare plot planted on clay and limestone. This Cuvee always has an excellent backbone of minerality with the ability to age. After spending a few years in bottle, this is in an excellent stage for enjoyment and is one of the top examples of this vineyard from Francois of all time. We have low pricing on the only bottles available in the USA right now, and considering the prices for other producers '17 Champs-Gains, this is a great buy. This is highly recommended for the white Burgundy lover or even those who dabble with the high-end domestic Chardonnay.

Vinous (Neil Martin) 93 points! "The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru has a terse, more austere bouquet than its peers, displaying fine mineralité; perhaps this was an earlier-picked example. Fine malic/petrichor aromas come through with time. The palate is fresh on the entry, offering sour lemon and orange peel, fine weight and plenty of energy. There is a lovely bitterness to this Puligny, and a spiciness that lingers on the aftertaste. Needs careful matching insofar as it might feel a little raw tout seul, but with fruits de mer, it will sing. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune."

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 92 points! "Pale mid yellow. The bouquet suggests intensity while remaining quite reserved. Perhaps some crisp but ripe apples. Weight and tension together, with a full sweeter fruit at the back, ripe greengages. Should age further."

Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 91-93 points! "Aromas of crushed rocks, white flowers, lemon oil and crisp green apple preface the 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural wine with broad shoulders and superb energy and length that concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish. This is a real success."
