Fernand & Laurent Pillot, based in the renowned Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in Burgundy, have carved their niche as esteemed winemakers with a history deeply rooted in the region's winemaking legacy. Founded in 1973 by Fernand Pillot and continued by his son Laurent, the estate encompasses approximately 13 hectares of vineyards, predominantly planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Pillots adhere to traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques, with a keen focus on terroir expression and minimal intervention. Their commitment to quality is evident in consistently producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of Chassagne-Montrachet, garnering both critical acclaim and a loyal following in the world of fine wines.
While the white wines here are a mainstay for us, the Morgeot Rouge is a great example. It comes from some old vines with an original planting from 1953 and a more recent one in 1981. The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed, and put into the tank. After a few days of cold maceration, the alcoholic fermentation is started with ambient yeasts with regular cap punching. The juice is then transferred to barrels (~30% new), where it ages for 16 months before bottling. This is as serious as any Cote de Beaune red we have ever tasted. It is Intense yet elegant and complex, and while it will be approachable on the younger side, it's only going to get better with age. This is one of the top examples of the vintage and is just as good as JM Pillot's version, but at half the price, it's an excellent buy!
Burghound 90 points! "A restrained and slightly somber nose features notes of pepper, cherry, raspberry and more prominent earth influence. The delicious medium weight flavors possess a fleshy, plump and round mouthfeel while exhibiting fine depth and persistence on the mildly rustic finish. While this well-made effort could also be enjoyed young, a few years of cellaring should be beneficial."
