Part of the Legras Family legacy in Chouilly, where Chardonnay is king, Pierre Legras was a contemporary of Dom Perignon in the 17th century. Now in their 11th generation of family winemaking, Vincent Legras holds the reins of one of Chouillys oldest family wineries. Much like RL Legras, Pierre Legras is a master of Chardonnay, tending the vineyards organically and sustainably. Vinification occurred in 30% oak and stainless steel tank before being bottled in the following year and spending over ten years on the lees. 2012 was disgorged within the last year with a perfect dosage of 3g/l that compliments the juice's richness and acidity, providing just a bit of lift and letting the lovely mineral profile come through. It is a complex blanc de blancs of lemon pith, white peach, almond, and black currant leaf with some swirling; the oxygen coaxes out brioche, licorice, honey, toast, caramel, pears, and hazelnut. The palate is fresh, creamy, and energetic this year, with very soft, refined bubbles. There is very focused acidity and attack, leading to chalky minerality and saltiness that linger with tons of dry extract on the finish. A Stunning bottle of Blanc de Blancs, we rarely, if ever, see Pierre Legras in the USA, and the 2012 checks off every box required for fantastic Champagne. It's an impressive bottle of Champagne, and at this pricing, one of the best buys we have seen in quite some time!
