Here is a fun find from Palmer & Co, established in the 40s by seven families with Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims. Palmer & Co, which has no affiliation to Palmer in Bordeaux, is not a Champagne that we see outside of Europe with very little imported here. The Vintage Brut is a blend of 54% Chardonnay and 46% Pinot Noir from Sustainably grown premier cru and grand cru vineyards throughout the Montagne de Reims. This was released after six years on the lees with a dosage of 8g/l. It's a slightly more gourmand style of Champagne with rich and exotic notes countered by a precise acidity that brings it all into balance. This recently was scored #10 out of 100 best Champagnes of 2021 from a famous French publication, "Fine Champagne Magazine," landing just three spots behind 2012 Cristal (2008 Taittinger was #1). It is a fun new Champagne that brings Grand Marque style to grower pricing, which many are sure to enjoy. Gorgeous aromas of yellow fruits, peach blossoms, brioche, wild herbs, figs, and minerals jump from the glass. A fine bead of bubbles with excellent depth and richness kept in check by well-integrated acidity. The Champagne finishes with lovely ripe apple, saline, nougat, and liquid minerals. A truly remarkable bottle of Champagne that showcases the beauty of the 2012 vintage.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93 points! "Disgorged in May 2018 with eight grams per liter dosage, Palmer's newly released 2012 Brut Vintage is showing very well indeed, offering up a deep bouquet of peach, yellow orchard fruit, buttered toast and iodine. Full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it's a rich and muscular wine, reflecting the concentrated vintage, with racy acids and a classy pinpoint mousse."
Wine Spectator 93 points! "This expressive Champagne is laced with exotic notes of fresh ginger, jasmine and lime blossom, with a toasty edge of grilled nut to the black cherry and nectarine fruit flavors. Firm and well-knit, offering a lingering finish. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Drink now through 2034. 42 cases imported."
