2019 Moussé Fils Champagne Terre d'illite Blanc de Noirs

$69.99
2019 Moussé Fils Champagne Terre d'illite Blanc de Noirs
These are the last bottles we are able to offer of this fantastic Champagne from Mousse Fils. One of the top bottlings here, this Blanc de Noirs, made with mostly Pinot Meunier, shows off the house's expertise of the grape from vineyards that see more animals than machines. This is an incredible pure example of Champagne from one of the top biodynamicists, and at this low price, it's an incredible buy.

Under the direction of Cedric Mousse and with the completion of his new winery in 2012, both events have helped take this Champagne house to another level. A grower since 1750, Champagne Moussé sits in the village of Cuisles, in a valley perpendicular to the Vallee de la Marne. This side valley has a unique soil in Champagne: schist with a clay subsoil. While Pinot Meunier often struggles to be taken seriously in Champagne, at Moussé Fils, Pinot Meunier is celebrated. 80% of the vines here are planted to Pinot Meunier. The heights and the exotic character Pinot Meunier can bring to Champagne if farmed correctly and from the right soil type are quite amazing, and the biodynamic and organic approach here helps grow some outstanding fruit. Tasting the Mousse Fils Champagnes, you would not think that they are Pinot Meunier heavy Champagnes, for although bold, they have an uncanny sense of balance, place, and harmony. Terre d'illite is one of the top selections here and comes from special plots grown on very shallow topsoil and a thick layer of green clay with a bit of limestone marl that helps drainage. This means that the soil can adapt and retain the perfect amount of water, whether wet or dry. The blend here is 80% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir, which sees malolactic fermentation with 36 months of aging on the lees. Minimal sulfur is used in these Champagnes; that which is used comes from sulfur mines that they collect themselves. Early reports here show that 2019 will be sensational with a 2-gram dosage just so pure, expressing beautiful minerality with pure fruit and the complexity of spices and flowers. It's an incredible bottle and one not to miss at this low price.
