Dehours is an esteemed Champagne producer renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to producing exquisite sparkling wines. We have offered a few of these in the past but only in small quantities, and today, we are offering the Oeil de Perdrix Extra Brut just in time for the big new score from Galloni. Founded in 1930 and perpetuated by the current generation of the Dehours family, the estate is situated in the heart of the Marne Valley, standing as a testament to the region's rich viticultural heritage with all vines located on the left bank and featuring clay and sand on chalky subsoil.
Dehours has consistently upheld its commitment excellent quality embracing innovation and modernity while focusing on vinifying single-vineyard bottlings, which they have been doing since 1999. The estate sustainably tends its vineyards with minimal use of chemicals, which are primarily planted to Pinot Meunier but with some Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in small quantities, supporting great biodiversity among their primarily old vines.
Œil de Perdrix is the name given to very pale colored rosé wines, and this is a beautiful example made with mostly Pinot Meunier, the iconic grape of the Marne Valley with a small percentage of Chardonnay. While this is not the single vineyard bottling (they make one called La Croix Joly, which is 100% Pinot Meunier), it is an excellent example from multiple plots and comes in at about $60 less. It features juice from a perpetual reserve that dates back to 1989 and aged on the lees for 15 to 24 months. This is a delicate and elegant rose of fruit and flowers with ample complexity and the more finely tuned notes that Meunier delivers. It's truly magical, and this rendition sees no dosage, allowing full expression to shine through, revealing its nice mineral backbone. A rare find in the USA, we have the only bottles of this one right now, and it is a fantastic Rose buy from one of the great Pinot Meunier producers.
