We were able to find some ex-cellar bottles of one of the wines of the vintage for 1997. We have had many incredible experiences with back-vintage bottles from Moulin Touahcais, who has been an excellent source for older Loire wines. For those not yet familiar, Moulin Touchais is an iconic producer in the Loire Valley. They make very serious Chenin from one of the region’s noble appellations. The grapes are picked in several passes blending both bone dry and sweeter grapes that give a beautifully balanced and energetic expression with the complexities and subtle sweetness of a moelleux level wine. They keep a large stash of older vintages, and the wines age exceptionally well. 1997 is a more recent release that is entering peak performance and should be a stellar bottle over the next decade or more—a great birth year bottle for those with kids that love wine. Two excellent recent notes below from Galloni and Gilman this is one not to miss.
John Gilman 95 points! "The 1997 and 1996 vintages were two very top, top years in Anjou, with the wines quite differently styled, but both years producing superb examples of Moulin Touchais. The 1997 is a nicely botrytized wine, delivering a deep and still quite youthful bouquet of fresh apricot, quince, a lovely base of chalky soil tones, honey, citrus peel and still a touch of adolescent wet wool in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite powerful in personality for Moulin Touchais, with a rock solid core, superb complexity and a very, very long, well-balanced and promising finish. The 1997 is eminently drinkable today, but the wine is still very much climbing and I would try to keep my hands off of bottles of this great wine for at least another five years and really let it blossom fully."
Antonio Galloni 93 points! "The 1997 Coteaux du Layon is rich, creamy and so expressive. Passionfruit, coconut, orange confit, exotic floral notes, spice and butter infuse the 1997 with striking layers of dimension. This heady, luscious sweet white has so much to offer.
