In general, the 2017 Eyrie Pinot Noirs we tasted were outstanding. They have a great sense of place, incredible balance, and long lingering finishes. The Pinot Noir that really caught my attention was the sister's vineyard. Like all the Eyrie vineyards, this is an organically farmed twenty-acre parcel located east of their other vineyard sites. This parcel was planted originally in 1989 and is named after the three Pinot sisters. Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. The vineyard is 50% volcanic and 50% marine sedimentary soils. It is also Eyrie's experimental farm with eight different varieties planted. The youngest block is used for rootstock as Jason continues the replanting project of his vineyards due to phylloxera.
The wine has aromas of red fruit, red flowers, blood orange, underbrush, spice, and minerals. The palate is supple, and elegant with linger notes of red fruits, earth, and spice dominating the long and seductive finish. This is the absolute must-buy for the old and new world Pinot Noir lover, and it's an outstanding deal too!
Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 94 pts! "Brilliant garnet. Mineral- and spice-accented aromas of fresh red berries, cherry and potpourri, plus a hint of incense in the background. Displays fine clarity to the sappy, appealingly sweet raspberry and cherry flavors, which are complemented by suave floral pastille and exotic spice flourishes. Finishes very long and supple, with harmonious tannins and emphatic, floral-tinged persistence. (Drink between 2022-2030)
