One of the best buys for Brunello for the 2016 vintage, we have a great price on this magnificent effort from Silvio Nardi. 2016 is hands down one of, if not the best example of the Brunello di Montalcino Normale from Silvio Nardi of all time and is an excellent bang for the buck, perfect for those looking to stretch their dollar a bit further. While it is a wine for the value-conscious, it is also one of the top examples of the vintage, making it an all-around fantastic choice for Brunello.
We have a fantastic late-release Brunello from the outstanding 2016 vintage. Originally a manufacturer of agricultural equipment in the 50s, Silvio Nardi was one of the first non-Montalcino natives to invest in the region's wine growing. His first purchase was Casale del Bosco, swiftly winning an award for the most agriculturally advanced estate in Montalcino by the Ministry of Agriculture before buying another estate. This time, Manachiara, which came with 40 hectares of vineyards, is located near Castelnuovo dell'Abate, about 15 miles from Casale del Bosco. The Nardi influence started to grow, and Silvo became one of the founding members of the Consortium of Brunello, which still operates today as a safeguard to the region. In 1972 Silvio purchased another estate, Bibbiano, in the municipality of Buonconvento, which also came with a medieval castle. With the help of his youngest daughter, Emilia, who came on board in the mid-80s, the Nardi name has remained a prominent figure in the region, making wines from their famous Casale del Bosco on the east and Manachiara on the west, providing a look at two different aspects of Montalcino. The Brunello di Montalcino here sees fruit from both estates drawing on the best elements of both sites. 2016 is one of the greatest Brunellos ever from Nardi and is nothing short of sensational, especially considering the price point. This is a knockout that is intense, complex, rich yet energetic, and structured with incredible fruit and aromatic expression. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Silvio Nardi is worth every penny, making it a fantastic buy for the category. Three raving notes below, this is not a wine to miss at this low pricing.
Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 95+ points! "The Tenute Silvio Nardi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino makes a big impact in the glass thanks to its dark color saturation and the pretty intensity of its aromas that range from dark fruit and plum to soft potting soil and grilled herb. You get beautiful balance here, even more so when you allow the bottle to breathe for a few hours. A twofold delivery of freshness and tannic backbone gives the wine the DNA required to hold 10 years or more."
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points! "The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino has aromatics of savory dried herbs, black plum, cola, and stony earth. The palate is fruit forward and full of ripe cherry, balsamic, and iron rich minerality. There are silky tannins that emerge from its fruit, along with balanced acidity. Though it is open and generous now, there is lots of life for this to unfold over time. Drink 2024-2034. <!--more-->Silvio Nardi was one of twelve historic founding members of the Consozio del Brunello di Montalcino in 1967. The estate consists of two properties, those of the original holdings established in 1950 of Casale del Bosco in the northwest, and Manachiara in the southeast acquired in 1962. The team is currently overseen by Silvio’s daughter, Emilia Nardi. Since the early 1990’s they have implemented extensive research into zonation of the region, clonal selections of the estate, and vineyard replanting with an emphasis on sustainability and low-impact vineyard practices. Each of their 50 parcels are fermented separately prior to blending and being aged in tonneaux and large casks, under the eye of oenologist consultant, Eric Boissenot."
James Suckling 95 points! "A creamy and juicy Brunello with dried-berry, peach and dusty-earth character. It’s full-bodied, chewy and very intense. Lots of fruit, yet reserved and toned with tannins that stay with you throughout. Give it at least three of four years to open."
