2016 in Chinon started off very rough for Bernard Baudry and the wine other growers in the region. An early spring frost destroyed nearly 50% of the buds, followed by heavy rains resulting in a takeover of mildew. Baudrys crop was reduced significantly and was forced into a late growing season. As the harvest drew closer though, the conditions improved and the grapes that made it through a year of turmoil were beautifully concentrated by the low yields. Bernard Baudry’s “Clos Guillot” faired very well despite the conditions playing to the fact that sometimes “the stressed vine makes the best wine” which is the case here. The result is deep wine with fresh red fruit, spices, herbs, and big potential for aging. As always with Baudrys wines all crops are manually harvested and treated naturally. Baudrys great attention to detail with a stepped back approach made his 2016 Chinon “Clos Guillot” a wine that should be on every Cabernet Franc lover list.
