Cascina Rocalini is a one-person show working wines in the Roccalini vineyard where the winery gets its name. We were able to visit the winery last summer, and it was one of our favorites for the trip. The winemaker Paolo Veglio is a gentle giant and, at the time, had long wild hair and would reach down every so often to pet a cat that was following him around. His wines are an embodiment of his personality, complex, mysterious, powerful, yet with a gentle touch. Paolo has several different varieties of Nebbiolo growing in his vineyards to promote biodiversity and complexity. He also supports organic cultivation and showed us how alive his vines are; grasses and plants were thriving all around. His wines are classic Barbaresco and are made in the traditional style. Paolo used to sell his grapes to Bruno Giacosa, and in the early 2000s chose to make and bottle his wine, a decision that made him less money but overall happier. 2015 is a strong vintage for northern Italian reds, and when we tasted it, we knew we would have to get our hands on some.
