2022 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs

As we mentioned before, Schafer-Frohlich has continued its reign as one of the most prolific and prominent producers of Großes Gewächs Rieslings. This is consistently one of the top dry wines that Schafer-Frohlich makes, with '22 being a true standout vintage. Dry Rieslings have gained popularity over the last decade, much like lower-dosage champagnes have, and it is easy to see why. With the lower sugar levels, the minerality and purity of fruit come to the forefront; they are slightly richer yet so vibrant. Winemaker Tim Frolich is at the top of his game, and the '22 Felseneck is another excellent vintage for this incredible site. Featuring slate and quartzite soils, Felseneck shows irrepressible power with remarkable finesse and precision and is typically one of the greatest GGs of the vintage. 2022 is another legend in the making from Schafer Frolich, and while it doesn't have the sheer intensity out of the gates as the '21, it is a classic example that is going to be exceptional with a bit more age. A magnificent and cerebral wine, we have low pricing on a very limited amount, and it is another highly recommended vintage of Felseneck GG.

Decanter 98 pts!  In a class of its own, almost as in every vintage. The steep site, visible from the winery, with its soil mixture of Rotliegend, slate, quartzite and basalt, is firmly associated with Schäfer-Fröhlich. Resting long on fine lees, it's rather restrained, with lemongrass, lemon jelly, mint and verbena, everything still tightly laced and held together by taut but ripe acidity, but you can feel the underlying power, which is set to evolve in the future. Overwhelming length on the finish. (Drink between 2028 - 2050)

James Suckling 98 points! "What amazing harmony this Nahe riesling GG has in spite of the vibrancy of its very racy acidity. Amazing spice and smoke in the nose with notes of pomelo and grapefruit on the concentrated and impeccably proportioned palate. Some grapefruit pith bitterness at the finish, but this just adds to the excitement that the slatey minerality generates and beams out to the whole galaxy. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. Vinous (Anne Krebiehl MW) 95-97 points! "The 2022 Riesling Bockenauer Felseneck Grosses Gewächs is made from vines between 60-65 years old, Fröhlich’s site with the highest average vine age. The nose has an exotic notion that flickers somehow between pineapple and lemon. The palate is super-light, clear and crystalline. Underneath, however, there is a concentration that seems like a salty, unforgiving, uncompromising rock. Tim Fröhlich has 8.5ha across three terraces and says: "This is why we have great potential here." It is a liquid that seems like lemon-scented air. There are no frills, just stone, citrus and saltiness. Wait for this. It comes on light feet. Absolutely clear-cut and for adults only. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2027-2050) (Sept 2023)"

Mosel Fine Wines 95+ points! "The 2022er Felseneck Riesling GG, as it is referred to on the front label, has a gorgeously smoky and flinty nose of fine smoked bacon and quickly shows huge complexity and depth as very fine and delicate notes of aniseed, cardamom, jasmine, licorice, spices, and wild herbs come through. The wine is superbly focused and taut on the palate, The energy is huge and the freshness is superb. The finish is racy and still marked by lime, yuzu, smoke, and greengage, so that it feels hugely racy. This dry Riesling needs a couple of years to mellow away its racy side and fully shine. It clearly has upside potential. 2029-2042+. (Sep 2023)"
