Rouchier is one of the smallest productions we have ever seen in the Rhone. The Domaine's total vineyard area is only 1.5 hectares, worked solely by husband and wife team Christian and Martine. In the Heart of Saint Joseph, Rouchier produces two 100% Syrah Lieu-dits, Luc and La Chave. Luc is a .5 hectare parcel planted in 1972 on clay on Schist soils. The vineyards are organic and biodynamic, and like a handful of producers in the Rhone valley, Rouchier bottles their wines naturally with no sulfur added. Rouchier is one of the first to apply these principles to their entire production in Saint Joseph, thanks due to the small size of the Domaine. These are very pure and expressive bottlings of Syrah, and the Luc shows incredible lushness of fruit with excellent soil expression. Rouchier has been polishing their wines, producing fresh examples, and leaning away from the ultra-rustic style that their first vintages saw. We offered the '17 and '18s a year ago, and now that the 2019s are completed, they look to be the best yet, showing excellent power and balance. Rouchier is only imported in tiny quantities a is a perfect choice for those who love the biodynamic winemaking style and like exploring the ultra-rare and small productions side of wine. We currently have low pricing on some of the only bottles available in the USA.
Decanter 93 points! "The name of this wine, Luc, refers to the name of the vineyard parcel it comes from. It’s a fragrant, violet-tinged, lightly peppery style, with some blackberry characters. Surprisingly grippy finish from the stems, with a savoury note and some dusty thyme. Highly authentic and delicious, a real wine of place, not hugely complex or long, but such great local expression and so drinkable."
