Since Raj Par has come on board, the wines from Stolo have been sensational, and both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have been incredible this vintage. We have a bit more of the Reserve Pinot Today, which is a fantastic Burgundy-inspired wine that we found very impressive. The Hillside Reserve is a gorgeous Pinot Noir and the start of something great from Stolo and Raj Par.
Another new release from Stolo with Raj Par as a winemaker creating exciting wines from California. 2021 is the first vintage he has finished by himself here, and this time, we have the Pinot Noir from the same Reserve Hillside Vineyard. Raj started working with Stolo Family vineyards in 2019, and the wines were quickly a success, making lovely Chardonnay with a nod towards Burgundy. We offered the regular 2020 Chardonnay a few months back, but this is even better and is his "Hillside Reserve" bottling.
The Hillside Vineyard sits atop an ancient Monterey Shale limestone sea mount with thin top soils. The ocean views from the top of the vineyard clearly illustrate the coastal influence of this site, making for cool, foggy nights that produce well-structured grapes for winemaking. These are dry-farmed original vines, farmed sustainably and left undisturbed for 30 years, giving them a deep root structure, thin canopies, and resilient vine stock, which is partly why the fruit here is so good.
Raj has an incredible palate from being a Somallier for many years, and he thinks this is one of the best regions in California for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2021s here are gorgeous and some of the best examples to come from Stolo ever with Raj using a bit of whole custers. Once again, it is the perfect wine for both European and domestic palates, showing an equal amount of beautiful fruit and terroir expression. Like the Chardonnay, this was also just released and is simply a brilliant bottle and one of the top buys for California Pinot Noir this year.
Wine Advocate (Erin Brooks) 96 pts! "Medium ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Hillside Reserve opens with broody tones of flint and oolong tea leaves, with a core of cranberry, sour cherry, tangerine and Angostura bitters. The medium-bodied palate strikes a fine balance of generous, crunchy fruit and savory undertones. It has a frame of chalky tannins, mouthwatering acidity and a long finish with fine earthy accents. Yum!"
