The Barge family wines are fantastic examples of Cote-Rotie and are an address that devoted Cote-Rotie fans will recognize. Formerly known as Gilles Barge or Julien Barge, today it's just Domaine Barge, but the family is still very much in play. The Domaine is currently operated by Julien Barge, son of Gilles, but this vintage that we are offering today would have been made by Gilles, who retired in 2019. These are stunning classic examples of Cote-Rotie that rub shoulders with some of the best of the appellation while remaining at very reasonable pricing. The Cote Brune is one of the top examples made here and comes from an old family holding that the family started cultivating as organic in the early 2010s. This is an exercise in purity and shows how complex and layered Syrah can be in the right hands. It is one of the best examples ever to be made here. We tasted this recently, and it was a phenomenal example of aged Cote-Rotie. It is just starting to enter a great window to be enjoyed now, but it has plenty of life ahead. These bottles are in perfect condition and are coming ex-cellar from Domaine Barge. These wines are incredibly rare, and we have the only bottles of this one in the US. With no increase over the current vintages, it is highly recommended.
John Gilman 95 pts! The 2013 Côte Brune bottling from the Barge family is a glorious expression of this legendary vineyard, as the purity of the vintage allows every ounce of complexity of Côte Brune to shine through, even at this very early stage in the wine’s development! The bouquet is precise and classic, wafting from the glass in a blend of black cherries, roasted game, woodsmoke, youthful stems, pepper, a touch of youthful syrah medicinal overtones and a very complex base of dark, stony soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with a firm chassis of ripe tannin, great balance and a very long, primary and palate-staining finish. This is going to be a great, great bottle of Côte-Rôtie in the fullness of time, and fans of Marius Gentaz would do well to tuck a box of this wine away in their cellars for future gratification!
