Today, we have the last bottles of this fantastic Albarino from Nanclares y Prieto. Founded by Alberto Nanclares, who started making wine in his garage in 1997; he was eventually acquainted with Silvia Prieto in 2009, who was doing wine analysis for wineries and would come to join Alberto many years later in 2015. Both have a passion for organic, traditionally made wines from incredibly healthy fruit, and the idea here is to have the best fruit enter the winery with minimal intervention, letting the full expression of the vineyards, grapes, and vintage shine through. The duo is based in Galacia, which is one of our favorites for white wines, and this is stunning. O Bocoi Vello de Silvia is Albariño from several plots in Sanxenxo and Meaño featuring vines that range from 25-95 years old. The plots are mostly west-facing and planted on a mix of clay, granodiorite, and sandy granite soils. Naturally looking to perpetuate tradition, harvesting is done entirely by hand, sorted, and foot-stomped in the ancient method, with around two days of maceration on the skins and stems followed by a gentle pressing in a pneumatic press. The juice ferments with its native yeasts in reconditioned 90+-year-old 1900L chestnut barrels (seen on the label), then rests on the lees for seven months in the same vessel, with weekly batonnage for the first month. It is truly a master class for Albarino with excellent density, depth, complexity, richness, and energy. This is much more serious than your everyday Albariño, and today, we have low pricing on some of the only bottles in the USA. Don't miss these last bottles!
Wine Advocate (Luis Gutiérrez ) 93 pts! The 2022 O Bocoi Vello de Silvia has a nutty nose and some hints of dry straw. It's a little reductive and with more weight in the palate than the 2021 I tasted next to it. Some 2,500 bottles were filled before the 2023 wine was put to ferment in the same old chestnut cask.
John Gilman 92 pts! As I have mentioned in the past, the O Bocoi Vello bottling of Albariño from Alberto Nanclares and Silvia Prieto is not a single vineyard wine, as it is crafted from a blend of three different vineyards. The bottling is aged in a combination of old, Galician oak foudre, and French oak demi-muids. The 2022 version delivers a lovely aromatic constellation of pineapple, orange peel, beeswax, stony soil tones, gentle marine tones and a discreet framing of old oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with fine depth at the core, good acids and grip, lovely balance and a long, classy and gently oaky finish. Good juice. (Drink between 2024 - 2035)
