2016 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara
We have a fantastic late-release Brunello from the outstanding 2016 vintage. Originally an agricultural equipment manufacturer in the 50s, Silvio Nardi was one of the first non-Montalcino natives to invest in the region's wine growing. His first purchase was Casale del Bosco, swiftly winning an award for the most agriculturally advanced estate in Montalcino by the Ministry of Agriculture before buying another estate. This time, Manachiara, which came with 40 hectares of vineyards, which is located near Castelnuovo dell'Abate, about 15 miles from Casale del Bosco.
The Nardi influence started to grow, and Silvo became one of the founding members of the Consortium of Brunello, which still operates today as a safeguard to the region. In 1972, Silvio purchased another estate, Bibbiano, in the municipality of Buonconvento, which also came with a medieval castle. With the help of his youngest daughter, Emilia, who came on board in the mid-80s, the Nardi name has remained a prominent figure in the region, making wines from their famous Casale del Bosco on the west and Manachiara on the east, providing a look at two different aspects of Montalcino.
We have the single vineyard Manachiara today, which comes from their eastern property from the incredible 2016 vintage. 2016 is the basis for the greatest example of the Manachiara ever from Silvio Nardi. The vines here have some significant age and are planted on sands rich in quartz and Pliocene clays at about 1000 feet elevation. It is a wine that embodies intensity and elegance with profound aromatics that show an array of beautiful red fruit, flowers, spice, and a fantastic minerality. Delicate yet powerful with excellent structure, it's a wine that needs ample time in the bottle to truly blossom. This is starting to enter its window for drinking but will continue to age for over another decade or more. This is one of the wines of the vintage for 2016 Brunello, and it comes in at more reasonable pricing, with most examples well over $100, and many are in the $300+ range. We have low pricing today on this incredible Brunello, and it is one of the wines of the vintage, especially at this low pricing.

Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 97 points! "In years past, I have commented on the pretty mineral nuances laced into the bouquet of this single-vineyard wine. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara delivers those tones with extreme clarity and precision, giving this vintage a distinctive personality and identity. Equally impressive, however, is the structure and fiber of the wine that is clearly more robust, concentrated and well-balanced overall. This quality comes from both the fruit and the oak, and these two forces play against each other with nice contrasts. It is no exaggeration to say that this vintage delivers "more Brunello" on all fronts compared to recent past vintages. This is a standout wine."

James Suckling 97 points! "This is really beautiful with black cherries, porcini mushrooms, black walnuts and dried flowers on the nose. It’s full-bodied, yet very toned and tight with class and precision. Wonderful length and focus. Goes on for minutes. What a wine from here. Best ever? Try after 2025."

Antonio Galloni 96 points! "The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara is fruit-forward and seductive. It’s exotic, showing spiced black cherries, hints of tangerine, sweet herbs and mocha. The textures are velvety, weighty yet pure, energized by vibrant acidity, as tart red and black berries saturate all that they touch, leaving a coating of fine tannins in their wake. The expression becomes dry and youthfully structured; yet intensity remains high throughout the finale, as this tapers off to dried fruits, baker’s chocolate and hints of licorice. The Vigneto Manachiara is made from a site on the eastern side of Montalcino at around 300 meters. The wine spends eighteen months in French barrique, followed by another twelve months in Slavonian oak barrels. While the oak comes through in the finished wine, it does so with impeccable style. That said, the 2016 will take some time to soften and reveal all of its charms."
