2018 Peter Jakob Kühn Oestricher Doosberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs

For 230 years, the Kuhn family has been cultivating Riesling on the slate and quartzite soils of the Middle Rheingau. For over ten generations, the family has expanded their holdings and passed them down, excelling at farming; biodynamics was a natural conversion and has been practiced here since 2004. As many great winemakers believe, the wine is made in the vineyard. Extensive work is done to maintain a diverse and rich environment for cultivating high-quality grapes with sustainability and little impact on the environment in mind. The Doosberg vineyard, named after Doos or Badgers, is a southwest-facing hilltop vineyard that is constantly bombarded with winds that help the grapes keep dry and healthy while keeping summer temperatures down. The soils here are deep and water-bearing quartzite and clay, which helps the dry external conditions and imbues the wines with a crystalline minerality. It is a perfect vineyard to make dry Riesling from, and 2018 is the best vintage of the Doosberg so far. The family continues to improve their wines, recently extending and slowing down the aging from 1 to 3 years before release. This quest for the best keeps the Kuhn's on their toes and the top of their game; there is no time to relax. Stephan Reinhardt calls the wines here "some of the finest on the planet" and an "Icon of Germany." The Doosberg GG is not-to-miss and is one of the ultimate examples of Biodynamically Grown Riesling available.

Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 97+ points! "The 2018 Doosberg Riesling Trocken GG is enormously fine and precise and even coolish on the deep and complex nose, given this spectacularly warm and dry year. The deep, clayey soils of the Doosberg, however, didn't cause any stress. On the palate, this is an intense, finely juicy, seamlessly textured, sublime, highly elegant and complex Doosberg with remarkable purity and finesse and a salty finish with a fine grip and lemon flavors. This is an extraordinary Doosberg."
