As we have stated, this estate is led by Frederic and Flavian Nowack, with Flavien studying with producers like Emmanuel Brochet, transforming this estate into a small treasure. The Nowacks have been making Champagnes for generations. Still, Flavien, in 2011, had a vision for a single parcel and single village wines made from his family holdings and has slowly every year, started the process to convert one of his vineyards to Biodynamic to be used for his production later on. This is an incredible amount of work for such a small show, and most families would end up selling grapes, which is much more comfortable and makes more money. However, it is a labor of love, and because of the work, it has put Nowack on the map. The estate is located in Vandières, in the Marne Valley, Southwest of Reims and Northwest of Epernay, with 75% of the vines planted in Pinot Meunier and the remaining split between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Today we offer the Autre, a nonvintage Cuvee based on the 2020 vintage. Made with 100% Pinot Meunier, the fruit is from a few biodynamically farmed parcels in the Vandières. Fermented with natural yeasts in a combination of stainless steel tank and oak barrels, using grape must for the secondary fermentation in the bottle. This is similar to the SA but shows off the Nowacks' expertise with Pinot Meunier. The resulting Champagne isn't as effervescent but more serious like a wine, similar to the style of Francis Boulard. The dosage here is also low, around 2 grams, allowing for the purest expression. The Autre is a great way to experience the wines of Nowack at a bit lower pricing and also their work with Pinot Meunier, which is typically used in their higher-end cuvees only. Production is limited here, and right now, we have the only bottles available in the USA.
