2021 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Großes Gewächs

$39.99
2021 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Großes Gewächs
We have two fantastic wines from Selbach-Oster today from two exceptional Mosel vineyards. These two sites are excellent candidates for Grosses Gewachs Riesling due to their ability to get a bit warmer, with 2021 being two sensational examples.
Selbach-Oster, established in 1660 in the Mosel region of Germany, has an impressive lineage that spans over three centuries; the estate boasts a meticulous approach to viticulture, focusing on the cultivation of Riesling grapes across 20 hectares of vineyards. The winery, currently helmed by the dynamic Johannes Selbach, adheres to traditional winemaking practices, with a commitment to organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. The steep slopes of the Mosel, where the vines thrive, contribute to the distinctive character of their wines. Selbach-Oster is renowned for producing high-quality, terroir-driven Rieslings that showcase the region's unique slate soils. With a production history that predates modernity, the estate combines tradition and innovation to craft wines that encapsulate the essence of Mosel's winemaking heritage. These are newer wines from Selbach-Oster but some of the best buys of the vintage, and we have low pricing on both of these incredible examples today.
The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr site is the downstream continuation of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. It is one of the most famous Mosel sites, a steep slope with many protruding slate cliffs. The topsoil consists of coarse Devonian slate boulders, the subsoil of soft, weathered slate resting on primary rock. Of Selbach-Oster's 6 best locations, this is the most rocky, driest soil. The vines are located in pure south, exposure between 360 and 750 feet above sea level. The wines of the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr have a delicate, slightly salty minerality. They are yellow-fruity, fine-floral, with expressive spice. Playful and very complex.
Wine Advocate (Stephen Reinhardt) 95-97 pts! "The 2021 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr GG is coolish and flinty on the aristocratic, elegant and refined nose. Supple but light and juicy on the palate, this is a round but elegant and refined, pure and salty ZSU with darker toned, lush fruit. It's very, very elegant but also tensioned and very mineral in its expression. Remarkably fine and leaner than the twin from Wehlen. From vines about 60 years old in the lower part of the vineyard close to the rocks. Tasted as a sample in July 2022."
