A recent arrival, after tasting this again, we are convinced that Kesseler makes the best Pinot Noir in Germany. August took over his parent's estate, founded in 1924, at the young age of 19. At that time, the vineyards only totaled 6 acres, but today, under August's guidance, the estate spans over 80 acres and is one of the flagship producers in the Rheingau. We have offered a few German Pinots before, but they can be a bit pricey. It is hard to take a flier on a bottle that is $60+, which is why this is an excellent entry for those wanting to try Pinot Noir from Germany. Kesseler is hands down the top stop for Pinot Noir in Germany, and the 'Daily August' carries the same finesse and elegance that his top cuvees show at a fraction of the price. The aromatics here are fantastic and very expressive, with an incredible high-tone perfume of roses and sweet red fruits, a cool slatey minerality, and a touch of spice. You'd expect the palate to be a bit thin at this price point, but it is not. There is an immediate rush of fresh red fruit and spice followed by an unexpected richness and concentration, gentle tannin, vibrant acidity, and long red skin finish. Having tasted many of the Pinot Noirs from Kesseler, I can say that this is not a wine that is merely slapped together with lesser vines; it is a masterpiece at this level, with 2022 being the most exceptional example ever. This is one of those cases where you shouldn't let the price fool you, and this is better than many of the Bourgogne Rouge's or domestic Pinot's we have tried this year. Highly recommended!
Vinous 91 points! "The 2022 Pinot Noir The Daily August was sourced from Assmannshausen, Lorch and Rudesheim. Dark cherry is clothed in slight smoke on the nose. The palate opens sumptuously and smoothly, unfurling like velvet. Fine, dense, smooth tannins meet ripe dark cherry fruit, all framed with fine freshness. This totally over-delivers for an entry-level Pinot Noir. (Bone-dry)"
