We have a limited amount of a fantastic Riesling buy from Schloss Johannisberg, a producer from the Rheingau we have only offered a few times before. It is a magnificent estate that has been cultivating grapes and making wine for 1200 years from its 50 hectares of exactly south-facing vineyards grown on quartzite soils. The vineyards here lie right at the 50th parallel, which provides a significant diurnal swing that the Riesling loves: warm in the day and cool at night. The vines are all around 45 degrees of incline and over 600 feet of elevation, giving them excellent exposure to the sun. Schloss Johannisberg also owns a 300-hectare forest that lies to the north of the estate, where they source the oak to make their own barrels, which is quite unique. They also boast one of the most significant backlogs of Riesling, with 25,000 bottles stored in a 900-year-old subterranean library with the oldest wines dating to 1748. The wines here come from one vineyard split into different sections classified by their sweetness and quality level, which is indicated by the color of the capsule on each bottle. Grunlack, or green capsule, is the designation of the Spatlese here and is one of the classic bottles of the range that Shloss Johnnisberg has been making since 1775. The 2022s here are incredible, and this is one of the top buys of the vintage for Spatlese, hitting nearly every aspect that makes these wines so incredible. We have low pricing today on some of the only bottles available in the US right now, and it's not a bottle to miss this vintage.
James Suckling 99 points! "The nose of this Spatlese makes me think of 18th century engravings of pear and white peach varieties, but that only hints at the enveloping and astonishingly fine fruit that follows on the palate. A masterpiece of finesse, precision and balance, but even that doesn’t say the most important thing, which is the breathtaking leafy freshness and stony clarity at the stunningly long finish. When will it ever stop? From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 94+ points! "The 2022 Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack Riesling Spätlese opens with a clear, intense, aromatic, savory and flinty bouquet of tropical fruits intertwined with almost slatey, in any case, savory and saline notes. It is perfectly ripe and super precise and irresistible. Rich and lush but fine and elegant on the palate, this is another highlight of the 2022 vintage in the Rheingau. It is incredibly savory, lush and saline. You can't stop swallowing this beauty and picture-book Spätlese. It is mouthwatering without end. This is a fabulous wine of great precision and piquancy! 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023. 40,000 bottles produced."
Vinous (Anne Krebiehl) 94 points! "The 2022 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack Spätlese was harvested at the bottom of the slope with excellent water availability and without any botrytis at all. Bright tangerine and lemon citrus notes make the mouth water before even taking the first sip. More air adds faint notes of passion fruit foliage and then veers back to Navel orange peel. The palate is slender, brimming with sweet citrus, exploding into aromas combining tangerine peel and juice with riper and more tart notions of apricot, peach, lemon and kumquat. Purity, luminosity and lightness are vivid and exquisite here. Lovely balance, vivid freshness, lightness and depth are combined with bravura. There's 8.9g/L acidity and 76g/L residual sweetness, a lovely high-wire act."
