We have another great Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée today from Hubert Lignier, and the Grand Chaliot has long been the most serious expression of Pinot Noir at the Bourgogne level here. The wine comes from a 1.25-hectare parcel situated just below Nuits-Saint-Georges, planted with vines averaging roughly 30 years old, and its proximity to the village gives it noticeably more depth, structure, and complexity than one normally expects from Bourgogne Rouge. The 2023 was completely destemmed and gently fermented in a large tank without aggressive extraction, before being raised in used barrels, keeping the focus firmly on the fruit and vineyard. The generous vintage suits Grand Chaliot beautifully, with raspberry, red cherry and plum layered with subtle spice, earth and sous-bois, while fine tannins and fresh acidity give the wine enough structure to remain distinctly serious and Burgundian. There is nice richness through the middle, but it never loses the purity and restraint that define Lignier’s style.
