2023 Marcel Lapierre Morgon N (Sans Soufre) Eta 1-14-2025

$39.99
2023 Marcel Lapierre Morgon N (Sans Soufre) Eta 1-14-2025

It wouldn't be right without offering Lapierre's workhorse, Cuvee, every vintage, and we have the current release of the "N" from the 2023 vintage. Lapierre is one of the most recognized producers in Beaujolais, and the Morgon here is a knockout and has been one of the region's staples for many years. Winemaker Mathieu Lapierre makes two versions of this Cuvee, one with minimal sulfur (S) and one without (N) designated either by the letter "S" or "N" on the bottle's back label. This offer is for the Non-sulfur Cuvee, which is very dear to the Domaine, and Mathieu takes great strides to make sure it is as perfect as possible, which requires a high level of control. When we tasted there years ago, it is customary in Burgundy to pour the remaining wine from the tasting glass back into the barrel, but Mathieu stopped us, saying there is too much bacteria in the mouth and it could affect the wine. It makes sense, but it was the first time any winemaker had brought this up, which opened our eyes to this newer generation of winemakers willing to take quality and control to the extreme. Because of Mathieu's attention to detail, the "N" is the purest expression of Morgon possible, and it is always so fresh and delicious with excellent purity of fruit, spice, and underbrush complexity; it is a serious bottle but an absolute joy to drink capable of standing up to some premier cru Burgundy. We also have a few bottles of the 2023 "S" in magnums for $84.99, so email us if you are interested.

Vinous (Neal Martin) 93 pts! The 2023 Morgon (Non-Sulphité) has a fresh and vibrant nose, a little more brightness than the SO2 bottling. This conveys a sense of coiled-up energy. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and that same crunchy red fruit as the regular cuvée, but with a tad more flesh toward the finish. Lapierre told me that the brightness tends to disappear within six weeks, but nevertheless, this remains a magnificent Morgon. (Drink between 2025 - 2040)
