We tasted this wine last week and at the winery with Jim and his mother (pictured below). They are both awesome people, and Jim’s knowledge is incredible, tasting countless European wines that helped inspire the style of wines he likes to make. The quality of wine across the board at Arterberry Maresh is impressive, and I would consider them one of the great producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Oregon. Jim Maresh makes wines the way we like it, traditional method, classically inspired, old-world style wines applied to a new world terroir. The Pinot Noir here comes from Maresh Vineyard planted in 1970 and 1972 and Weber vineyard vines planted in 1983. The old vines here make a huge difference, adding an incredible amount of depth. Notes of blood orange, cassis, crushed violets, and forest floor jump from the glass, and above all else, a very concentrated iron and pitch of minerality reminding us of Richebourg with its excellent richness and power. 2018 is a superb rendition of this wine and one of our favorite vintages to date and highly recommended for new and old-world Pinot Noir lovers.
Wine Advocate (Erin Brooks) 94+ points! "Pale ruby-purple, the 2018 Pinot Noir Old Vines has an alluring perfume of blueberries, violets and dark cherries with accents of earth and amaro. The medium-bodied palate offers intense, broody fruits framed by muscular tannins and bright freshness, and it finishes long and full of flavor. It's still youthfully coiled and may improve with another year or two in bottle."
