While we dont offer many southern hemisphere wines, we have a great one today from Chile. The Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor, sourced from the 127-hectare Puente Alto Vineyard in the Maipo Valley, continues its legacy as Chile’s flagship Cabernet. This site, at 2,100 feet elevation on alluvial soils, has produced every vintage since Don Melchor’s 1987 debut and helped establish Chile on the global fine wine map. At the helm since 1997, Winemaker Enrique Tirado crafted the 2021 from a long, cool growing season that yielded intensely structured, fresh, and finely balanced fruit. Aged 15 months in 72% new French oak, it delivers deep cassis, graphite, and spice with refined tannins and precision. Consistently among Chile’s top Cabernets, the 2021 is one of the best ever and has serious aging potential. It is a world-class Cabernet that competes with some of the best in the world at a great price.
James Suckling 99 points! "Ashy graphite, cassis, iron, blackberries and a hint of cigar box and chocolate. Lots of violets, too. Rich and intense with a full-bodied palate. Showing density and very fine but structured tannins. Long and intense finish with lots of flavors. 93% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc and 3% merlot. One of the best over the last few years. Drinkable now, but will fledge and hold very well in the next 20 years."
Vinous 97 pts! "The 2021 Don Melchor is dark garnet red in the glass. The restrained nose offers pure fruity notes such as blackcurrant with hints of leaves and black tea, refined woody aromas, and gentle touches of plum and red bell pepper. In the mouth, it’s intense with mild juiciness and rounded tannins. The taut palate gradually grows more profound as it develops cedar flavors at the back of the throat before the long, rewarding finish. A wine that is more suggestive than explicit as it slowly envelops you in its different layers. The added freshness brings out the clarity of the fruity flavors. (Drink between 2026 - 2041)"
