One of the stars of Anjou, who has taken the world by storm, Thibaud Boudignon, is the young disciple of the Biodynamic Loire producer Richard Leroy. We've often referred to Thibaud's wines as the Roulot of the Loire Valley, the most tense, dry, mineral-driven Chenin made in the region and with an expert's touch. We have Thibaud's best wine today: the 2022 Clos de la Hutte, one of the best made here. This wine is 100% Chenin Blanc and comes from the Lieu-dit Clos de la Hutte, which is the namesake of the cuvee. Located in the hamlet of La Possonnière, this small site is one of the best in Anjou and was formerly a monastery. The soils here are perfect for growing exceptional grapes, with very thin topsoil overlying solid schist bedrock, and the vines have to dig their roots deep into the rock to survive. Thibauld picks at optimal ripeness, producing wines with the most character, depth, and density of any of his peers and ages in multiple-sized barrels from well-known coopers with limited new oak. 2022 capitalizes on the vintage's richness and ripeness while remaining incredibly fine, precise, and focused, with no overripeness or unwanted alcohol. There's a cloud of gently handled fruit that embraces the palate, but it does so in an elegant and light-on-its-feet way. Texturally, it's seamless and coats the mouth with fine texture. In terms of flavor, expect salty, briny notes and citrus tones alongside a touch of spice and nutty oak on the finish.
