2017 Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Im Weingebirge

$39.99
2017 Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Im Weingebirge
Nikolaihof is the fountainhead for the most incredible white wines in Austria. Rich with an almost 2,000-year-old history, Nikolaihof was purchased by the Saahs family in 1894, remaining the present-day owners. The key here is the extreme attention to detail in the vineyards, strictly upholding biodynamic practices led by winemaker Nikolaus Saahs. In the cellar, which is an ancient Roman crypt, the wines ferment with natural yeasts and are left to age in 2,000 liters to 12,000-liter barrels. Smaragd wines are released when ready, and it is not unheard of for some to stay in barrels for up to 20 years. Super expressive, complex, and long-lived, this is a bar setter for Gruner Veltliner. 2017 is a recent release and excellent rendition of this famed Gruner Veltliner, and currently, these are the only bottles available in the USA.

Wine Advocate (Stephen Reinhardt) 95+ points! "Bottled in April this year, the 2017 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is fascinatingly deep and refined on the complex, fresh, elegant and remarkably complex nose with its crystalline stone notes. On the palate, the wine reveals great finesse and elegance combined with substance, grip and sustainability. It is a full-bodied, powerful, rich and almost sweet, concentrated and tensioned terroir wine that is still young and ready to go a long distance. 13% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021."
