The Moldes As Dunas comes from Moldes' oldest vines from the highest elevation vineyards planted between 1940 and 1990. the vineyard is comprised of mineral-rich talc-like schist-derived sands. If Albarino were classified like Burgundy, this would most certainly be a grand cru. Galicia, Spain, is one of the world's most challenging growing regions, with lots of rain and humidity, making it a real challenge for those working the vines. For this reason, Manuel Moldes is a fanatic in the vineyard and the cellar, giving it his all to produce some of the greatest Albarinos made. Like Carema, Italy, the vines are trellised on 8-foot tall pergolas at 200 to 400 meters of elevation. These vineyards that Moldes cultivate are actually quite ancient sites that have been used for hundreds of years to grow grapes yet were left forgotten until Manuel revitalized them. Vines are tended sustainably, with grapes fermented and aged in old, sizeable French oak barrels with native yeasts. The As Dunas is the best Albarino produced here and comes from a unique site unlike any other in Galacia, made up of extremely fine decomposed schist sand with a texture like talc. The mineral content here is off the charts and is an outlier Albarino. Unlike the others in the range, which are ethereal and aromatic lifted, this is denser with sweet mint and exotic spices, with deeper volume and weight on the palate. This has incredible aromatics of lemon blossom, stonefruits, yellow fruits, herbs, and liquid minerals; all wrapped up with an impeccable balance, depth, and tons of dry extract. The crop here is tiny promoting concentration and tons of dry extract with a finish that lasts minutes. This is flat-out one of the best Albarinos made and if you love the tension of white Burgundy, you owe it to yourself to check this out, and it will also age for up to a decade in the cellar. Very limited, only around 10 cases were imported, and we only have one case remaining.
